Can you remember the first verse of scripture that you learned ? Well, I can. For me it was John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son, that whosever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." As a young boy who grew up in a non-churchgoing home, I learned that scripture fairly early on but it wasn't until many years later that I had any concept what it meant. You see, I assumed that it meant that in order to go to heaven I had to believe in the existence of God and His son, Jesus. Well, that was simple enough. I already believed in the existence of God. These were the days of Madelyn Murray and I knew that, unlike her, I was no atheist. I believed that all was right between the Lord and I for many years. I didn't know anything about being "saved", "born again", or "redeemed." I BELIEVED so therefore I must be a BELIEVER ! It was many years later that someone took the time to explain to me that a mere intellectual acknowledgement that the Lord of all existed was not what He required of me. The distance between my head and my heart is only approximately 15 inches but transferring my acceptance of God from the former to the latter proved to be a lengthy process. Asking God to pardon my sins finally gave Him access to my heart. God desires to rule in our hearts and He will accept nothing less. If God reigns in your heart, He has your head also. Yielding your heart to God is an act of contrition that allows Him to begin to turn you into that "new creation" that you were meant to be in Christ Jesus.
